When TRADITION stops working…

The mission statement for a yearbook is simple, to preserve memories of an iconic year.

Print yearbooks do that using text and photographs. The number of memories (photographs) is limited to the number of pages a school can afford. The average number of pages is around 104, which would be between 1000 and 1500 pictures. A 280-page book would average around 3000 pictures… or memories. Of course, a print book will only preserve memories of 2/3rds of the year due to deadlines, leaving out all the end-of-year events and activities, including, arguably the most important event of the year… graduation.

YearBoxx, being digital, can preserve an ‘unlimited’ number of memories. I put quotes around unlimited because that kinda suggest that a school could have one billion ‘memories’, but, you understand what I am suggesting. No longer will a yearbook advisor and staff have to make uncomfortable decisions about what to leave out of the yearbook.

So… Yearboxx can realistically contain tens of thousands of memories… INCLUDING videos, which I am counting as one memory in my made-up counting system. If your yearbook typically contains 48, or 72 or 104 pages, it can now hold the equivalent of a 500 plus page yearbook!

If the yearbook concept did not exist and someone introduced it now and offered a choice between two methodologies, which one would you choose:

  1. Having your school memories stored in a form factor that allows for two to three thousand pictures, does not include end-of-year activities and events (including graduation), can only be accessed (typically) when you are at home, never changes, and costs $75?
  2. Having your school memories stored in a form factor that allows tens of thousands of pictures and VIDEOS, includes the ENTIRE year (including graduation), can be accessed anytime, anywhere, is constantly updated, keeps classmates connected, can’t be lost and costs $9.99 (or less)?

Print yearbooks are a fantastic 160-year-old TRADITION. Things like landline telephones were a fantastic 148-year-old tradition… until something better came along with far better features and functionality!

So… which will it be, tradition or functionality?

Which form factor preserves memories of an iconic year better?

Something better has just come along…
